Large Animal Health Tips:
A Little More About Mad Cow Disease

Last month we talked about Mad Cow Disease, also known as Bovine
Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). We discussed the fact that there are many
of these "transmissable spongiform encephalopathies" out there in a number of
different species. CWD in deer, BSE in cattle, and Scrapie in sheep are all
prion associated diseases of the central nervous system.

It's important to remember that BSE affects only cattle. There is a similar disease
in people called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). This disease in humans occurs
naturally every year at a rate of one to two cases per million people throughout
the world, even in countries where BSE has never occurred. It affects people in
their 60's and 70's and is not linked to meat consumption.

Scientists believe that a related "variant CJD" is caused by consuming the brain
and spinal cord of animals affected with BSE. It usually affects young adults and
according to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, no cases of "variant CJD"
have been acquired in the U.S.  Since the BSE outbreak in Europe during the
1980's, 143 people in the U.K. and 15 from other countries have died from

"variant CJD". To keep this in perspective, each year 5,000 people in the U.S. die
from food-bourne illnesses, and obesity is thought to cause between 300,000 and
400,000 premature deaths.

It's also important to keep in mind that the infectious agent for BSE (called
prions) has  never been found in beef muscle (meat) nor has it ever been found in
milk or any milk products.

Please call (715) 723-3655 or e-mail with any questions
or requests regarding large animal veterinary care. We'll be happy to assist you in any
way we can.
